Cardiology

At TAC Healthcare Group we offer a range of cardiovascular screening tests and assessments.

Cardiology is the investigation, diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the cardiovascular system. This includes the heart, arteries, veins, arterioles, venules, and capillaries. At TAC Healthcare Group we have regular clinics with highly experienced Consultant Cardiologists.

Our range of cardiac tests diagnose and manage patients with a variety of cardiac conditions including arrhythmia, heart disease, high and low blood pressure (hypertension).

Nurse Led Services

We offer a drop-in service in which you can have your blood pressure and blood cholesterol checked. In addition, we can undertake a risk assessment for cardiovascular disease.

Consultant Cardiology Clinics

For a more in-depth assessment and management plan we offer a consultation with one of our experienced Consultant Cardiologists.

Dietician

Almost one half of all cardiac problems are preventable, and we offer expert dietetic advice for losing weight and reducing cardiac risk factors.

CARDIOVASCULAR SCREENING TESTS

Electrocardiogram (ECG)

An Electrocardiogram (ECG) is easily performed in the clinic and gives information on the rate and rhyme of the heart, both which may be changed in the event of cardiac disease.

In addition, an ECG maps the electrical activity of the heart as it beats. This has a well-defined pattern and alterations in this are indicators of heart disease.

Exercise Tolerance Test (ETT)

An Exercise Tolerance Test (ETT), through the use of exercise treadmill, can be used for identifying early signs of coronary artery disease. You may also hear this test called an exercise ECG or a cardiac stress test.

An exercise tolerance test allows a more accurate assessment of your risk of developing heart disease than a resting cardiogram (ECG) as it shows what happens as the heart is exercised.

Peripheral Vascular Assessment

The factors that lead to diseases of the cardiac blood vessels can also cause weakness and narrowing of the other arteries in the body. This can result in pain on walking, if the vessels in the leg are narrowed or to the development of strokes and aneurysms. Assessment of the peripheral blood vessels can be undertaken with an ultrasound scan.

Cardiology Tests

Echochardiography

An Echocardiography, more commonly referred to as an Echo Heart Scan, is an ultrasound test which allows the cardiologist to see accurate pictures of the heart muscle, the pumping chambers and the heart valves.

A probe is placed on the chest wall and an inaudible ultrasound beam passes out from the probe, reflects back from the structures within the heart and allows the cardiologist to build up an accurate image of the heart. A variety of views are taken to look at the heart structures. When these views are completed, a Doppler analysis is performed to analyse blood flow from chamber to chamber and across valves. More specialised analyses can be done looking at particular areas of the heart muscle, its movement and its relaxation.

The whole procedure takes about 30 minutes and is non-invasive.

Exercise Tolerance Test (ETT)

An Exercise Tolerance Test (ETT), through the use of exercise treadmill can be useful for identifying early signs of coronary artery disease. You may also hear this test called an exercise ECG. Although you may have had a resting Electrocardiogram (ECG) which can detect and demonstrate a number of abnormalities, the presence of a normal resting ECG does not rule out the possibility of significant coronary artery disease. Therefore, an Exercise Tolerance Test (ETT) can provide the cardiologist with more accurate and useful information.

The stress test is conducted in a closely supervised situation. You will be attached to the ECG recording monitor just as you were for the resting ECG. You will then sit on a bike or stand on a treadmill, which will begin to move very slowly. Progressively, as you become accustomed to the pace, the workload will be increased. All the time, the nurses will be monitoring your heart rate, blood pressure and looking carefully at the ECG for any changes. You will be asked to report any chest pain/tightness during the test.

You will be allowed to recover whilst we monitor the ECG and when your heart rate and blood pressure have returned to normal the test is finished. The Cardiologist will review and analyse your exercise test. You will receive the results immediately.
